The Lompoc Police Department provides many different types of full-time and part-time job opportunities.

The Lompoc Police Department is authorized 51 sworn full-time police officers. Some examples of police officer assignments are: Traditional Patrol, Motorcycle/Traffic Enforcement, Detectives, K-9, G.R.E.A.T. , Narcotics, and Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT), Crisis Negotiations Team (CNT), School Resource Officer (SRO).

The police officers are supported by the following full-time employees; 2 civilian supervisors, 9 Dispatchers, 4 Jailers, 5 Community Service Officers, and 6 Office Staff Assistants, and 4 interns.

The Lompoc Police Department could not complete its mission without the contribution of its part-time employees. Part-time employees serve as Reserve Police Officers, Dispatcher/Jailers, Office Staff Assistants, Community Services Officers, Crossing Guards, and Language Interpreters (Spanish, Hmong, & Sign Language).

TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS FOR POLICE OFFICER EMPLOYMENT:

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade. College level coursework or other specialized training in police science, psychology, public administration or related field is highly desirable.

Posses a California P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate from an approved Basic Academy dated within the past three years; OR possess a California P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate and have been employed as a Police Officer within the past three years by a California law enforcement agency.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION REQUIRED:

Possession of a valid and appropriate California Driver's License; AND a California P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate.

KNOWLEDGE OF:

Basic English composition, grammar and spelling; and basic math.

ABILITY TO:

Read, understand, interpret and apply laws, ordinances, regulations, codes, directives and police literature; write clear, comprehensive and accurate reports; operate a vehicle safely, under normal and emergency conditions; use and care for firearms; apply standard broadcasting procedures of a police radio system; inspire public confidence through personal integrity, appearance and actions; analyze situations and adopt a quick, effective and reasonable course of action; remember facts, names, faces and details of incidents accurately; speak clearly; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; and establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
